MSW's Culture and Groups

     One of the most difficult things to describe with any social group is the shared culture. In survival games, this is the true way a company that produces events differentiates themselves from other companies. In America, event companies hold events at locations that are also used by other companies. Sometimes the two companies will also hold their events just before or after another company's event. You could go to two events at the same location, with similar weather and have very different experiences each time because of the culture and structure of each event. 

社会的集団について説明するのが最も難しいものの 1 つは、共有される文化です。サバイバルゲームにおいては、これこそがイベントをプロデュースする企業の他の企業との本当の差別化方法です。アメリカでは、イベント会社が他の会社も利用している場所でイベントを開催します。場合によっては、他の企業のイベントの前後に両社がイベントを開催することもあります。同じような天気で同じ場所で 2 つのイベントに参加し、それぞれのイベントの文化と構造により、毎回まったく異なる体験をすることができます。

    I have been to several different events held by different companies, and the overall feelings of the event and the culture are the reasons I continued to go to events held by the same companies. I think MSW has the best culture out of the events I have been to, and I enjoy it so much that it makes me only want to attend those events. 

これまでにさまざまな企業のイベントに参加してきましたが、イベント全体の雰囲気や文化が同じ企業のイベントに通い続けた理由です。 MSWは私が行ったイベントの中で一番カルチャーが良いと思っていて、そのイベントだけは行きたくなるくらい楽しいです。

    From outside the community, MSW can seem like a harsh place to be in. Many people make jokes about the opposite faction, and both sides have tropes that are made fun of. While some of this can be extreme, the intent and feeling behind it is closer to fans of sports teams making fun of other teams or their fans. Some people may take these too seriously, but they are usually people that do not attend the events and only participate by posting the same jokes online. 

コミュニティの外から見ると、MSW は厳しい場所のように見えるかもしれません。多くの人が反対派について冗談を言い、どちらの派にもからかわれる比喩があります。極端な場合もありますが、その背後にある意図や感情は、スポーツ チームのファンが他のチームやそのファンをからかうことに近いものです。一部の人々はこれらを深刻に受け止めるかもしれませんが、通常はイベントには参加せず、同じジョークをオンラインに投稿することによってのみ参加する人々です。

    I think the best attitude for attending events is to be self aware. While the event can be physically and mentally difficult, and that a lot of effort is needed to complete the event, it is still fun and it doesn't need to be serious from start to finish. A good example of this is when my group KvB attacks a Russian group or patrol base, we are aggressive and try our hardest to eliminate all the Russian forces. After the end of the engagement, we usually congratulate the Russians on a good fight regardless of the outcome and usually have German candy to give to them. Recently we also have made custom playing cards to give out as well. These will be made for each event and can be collected if you find us and fight against us.

    Because the events for MSW happen several times a year, people that go to many of them over the years can form a good friendship with the staff and players on both sides. This trust between the staff and players can allow more exciting gameplay and opportunities that may not be available to people that are new to the company as an attendee. For example, a staff member that is frequently the NATO commanding officer has a good relationship with my group, KvB. He can ask us to go on a mission with his group, "Blue Diamond Group" (Abbreviated as BDG, a group that focuses on USMC re-creation). This type  of mission may only need a few people, or the importance is high and the staff want to make sure it is successful. Other times this relationship is used in an opposing way, the BDG staff will send KvB away to defend a place or patrol, because he has to monitor other groups and can trust us to do the assigned task.

Now I will discuss the actual groups for each faction at MSW. Please understand that I don't know everything but I will try to make my information as complete as possible.

Russian Forces (RUSFOR)

(A note on the current conflict in Ukraine): The owners and staff at MSW make sure that players and everyone understands that the events have no real basis in current politics. The storyline for MSW is NATO aggression into southern Russia around 2015. Because people have diverse political beliefs, political discussion of the conflict in Ukraine is not allowed. Because people that attend an event on the Russian side, or buy and use Russian gear, that does not mean they support Russia in the conflict.

Rushing Russians

The Rushing Russians were the first major group to go to MSW in force. At the time of their creation, NATO had plenty of attendees, but the Russian side was a lot smaller. The Rushing Russians (RR) were made to help the import of Russian military uniforms and gear, but also to serve as a dedicated fighting force at events to improve the quality of the events. Since I am not a member, I cannot make specific comments on how they operate. But from the outside, they have similar processes and organization to a 'Boy Scout' troop, or a 'Greek Letter Organization (University Fraternity)'. While every member is a part of the larger overall team, it is separated into smaller parts based in geographic locations called chapters. New chapters can be made with approval from older members sponsoring the aspiring group, and old chapters can be dissolved due to people moving away from the area, or leaving the hobby. 

Usually RR will have their initiation process after events for members that meet all the qualifications, and every RR member at the event will take part in the process of inducting the members or whole new chapters into the RR family. People that aren't a part of RR like to watch it and find it interesting, because it's a lot of exercise for the new members, and both the old members are screaming and yelling a lot.

Druzhina

Druzhina is a special forces group that focuses on a specific unit, SOBR Terek. Because they focus on a single unit like most NATO groups, they have a stronger visual appearance than their RUSFOR friends.

Green Beans Airsoft

While RR can recreate units from all over the Russian forces, including FSB, SOBR, VDV, MVD, and others, the Green Bean Airsoft (GBA) focuses on the Russian airborne troops (VDV) and their attached units. Given the nick name "Green Beans" or just "Beans" due to their Ratnik uniforms and gear making them look like large green beans, GBA is a more conventional look at Russian forces. Most of RR and other groups focus on the special forces, so having a conventional group is also good for balance.

DOA-I

A newer group, DOA-I is focused on the Russian-allied Militia Forces. They take inspiration from the annexation of Crimea in 2014, but their goals are to improve the quality of Militia attendees. It is often recommended to new players to attend an event as Militia, due to their loose requirements for gear. While this does allow people to attend events more easily, the spirit of the rules can be avoided by some people. DOA-I aims to be a group that helps enforce this spirit as a fighting militia allied with the conventional Russian forces.

NATO FORCES

Blue Diamond Group

One of the oldest NATO groups, the Blue Diamond Group (BDG) has a long history of being and excellent fighting force at MSW. Focusing on US Marine Corps reconnaissance, BDG is famous for their daring nighttime raids on Russian held territory and patrolling bases. I've worked with BDG several times and having another mature and effective group can really change the outcome of an event. Besides the USMC camouflage they usually wear, BDG has also used flight suits for urban events as an easy way to identify themselves.

NATO グループの中で最も古いグループの 1 つであるブルー ダイヤモンド グループ (BDG) は、長い歴史と MSW における優れた戦闘力を持っています。米海兵隊の偵察に重点を置くBDGは、ロシア占領地域や哨戒基地への大胆な夜間襲撃で有名である。私は BDG と何度か仕事をしましたが、成熟した効果的なグループが他に存在することで、イベントの結果が大きく変わる可能性があります。 BDG は、普段着用している USMC 迷彩のほかに、自分たちを識別する簡単な方法として、都市部のイベントでもフライト スーツを使用しています。

TF Mongoose

Along with BDG and the Grommets, TF Mongoose make up the oldest NATO groups. 'Mongoose' focuses on UK Special Forces gear, and for a while had access to a mortar system with pyrotechnic grenades. Like the other old groups, I've worked with 'Mongoose' many times and I enjoy their humor and exaggerated British accents they use at events.

Grommets

The final original group of NATO not based on the conventional US Army, the Grommets use the same gear from the Polish unit JWK GROM. While the Grommets' gear can be very similar to the groups copying US Army Rangers, when the Grommets are in their normal Polish camouflage and boonie hats with nets, they have a much more intimidating look. My first event with NATO was attached to the Grommets and they have the same level of aggression as BDG when they constantly attack RUSFOR.

従来のアメリカ軍に基づいていない NATO の最後のオリジナルグループであるグロメットは、ポーランドの部隊 JWK GROM からのものと同じギアを使用します。Grommet の装備は、アメリカ陸軍レンジャーを模倣したグループと非常によく似ていますが、Grommetが通常のポーランド迷彩とネット付きのブーニーハットを身に着けているとき、彼らははるかに威圧的な外観になります。私のNATOとの最初のイベントはGrommetに参加したもので、彼らは絶えずRUSFORを攻撃するBDGと同じレベルの攻撃性を持っています。

Kampfverband

Finally, we come to my main group, Kampfverband (KvB). Started just after the original groups of Mongoose, Grommets and BDG, KvB focuses on the KSK and Kampfretter of Germany. We are infamous for our ability to fight at night, and having the strictest policies regarding which gear is permitted to use. We're currently updating our kit era from 2011-2013 to 2015-2017, which has a lot of changes.

Sparta Kompanie

You may think that Sparta Kompanie (SK) is a sister group or the same as KvB, but we're actually two different groups. The main difference is that SK focuses on German Airborne units (EGB), while KvB focuses on KSK and KR gear. Because KvB is moving to a more modern era, the differences will be smaller, but usually KvB will use the 5 color woodland uniform, and SK will use the 3 color desert uniform. SK is a younger group, so they're still growing and finding their own personality, but I've liked working with them in the past.

Sparta Kompanie (SK) は姉妹グループ、または KvB と同じだと思われるかもしれませんが、実際には 2 つの異なるグループです。主な違いは、SK はドイツ空挺部隊 (EGB) に焦点を当てているのに対し、KvB は KSK と KR 装備に焦点を当てていることです。 KvBはより現代的な時代に移行しているため、違いは小さくなりますが、通常、KvBは5色の森林ユニフォームを使用し、SKは3色の砂漠ユニフォームを使用します。 SKは若いグループなので、まだ成長して自分たちの個性を見つけている途中ですが、私は以前から彼らと一緒に仕事をするのが好きでした。

GEO 'Oso' XXI

Located on the west coast, Oso is a Spanish Special Forces interest group. Like the JGSDF group, they tend to only go to events in the western parts of America. I don't know a lot about them, but I would like to attend an event so I can learn more. I can already speak a little Spanish, so using that could be a way to make communications more secure during the event.

西海岸に位置するOsoはスペイン特殊部隊の利益団体です。陸上自衛隊のグループと同様に、彼らはアメリカ西部のイベントにしか行かない傾向があります。あまり詳しくないのですが、イベントに参加して詳しく知りたいと思っています。私はすでにスペイン語を少し話すことができるので、それを使用することでイベント中のコミュニケーションをより安全にする方法になる可能性があります。

TF Keg

The NATO counterpart to GBA and DOA-I, TF Keg is a group that focuses on the 10th Mountain group from the US Army. Already a large group, Keg has been popular with NATO attendees that want to join an impression group, but have a smaller budget or do not want to join one of the European focused groups. Their distinctive look is from their mix of UCP and Multicam, so they are easily found even in general NATO forces that are only allowed to use Multicam. I've worked with Keg several times and they have a strong and enthusiastic spirit for MSW events.

TF Bottleneck

A sister group to TF Keg, TF Bottleneck (TFBN) is a group focused on US Marine Corps gear. TBFN want to be a similar entry point into NATO groups, but they focus specifically on using heavier weapon systems like the M249 SAW, M240B, and grenade launchers. I think they have a lot of promise like Keg does, and more experience will make them into a better group.

TF Keg の姉妹グループである TF Bottleneck (TFBN) は、米国海兵隊の装備に焦点を当てたグループです。 TBFNはNATOグループへの同様の入り口になりたいと考えているが、特にM249 SAW、M240B、手榴弾発射装置などのより重い兵器システムの使用に重点を置いている。 Kegと同じように彼らには多くの将来性があると思うし、より多くの経験を積むことで彼らはより良いグループになるだろう。

JGSDF.US

It may be surprising to some, but Japan has a represented group at MSW! They mostly stay to the events on the west coast of America, but members do semi regularly visit Japan for various reasons. I'm a probationary member of this group because I can access the gear more easily here in Japan, and to encourage Japanese survival game enthusiasts to try and travel to America.

驚かれる方もいるかもしれませんが、MSW には日本を代表するグループがあります。主にアメリカ西海岸でのイベントに滞在することが多いですが、メンバーは様々な理由で準定期的に日本を訪れています。私がこのグループの暫定メンバーになっているのは、ここ日本でより簡単にギアにアクセスできるためと、日本のサバゲー愛好家にアメリカ旅行に挑戦するよう奨励するためです。

ODG

Another western focused group, Original Detachment Group (ODG) focuses on US Air Force counter-terrorist missions. Like the other western coast groups, I have no experience with them, but overall their reputation is well regarded online and I would like to work with them in the future.

もう一つの西側に焦点を当てたグループであるオリジナル デタッチメント グループ (ODG) は、米空軍の対テロ任務に焦点を当てています。他の西海岸のグループと同様に、私も彼らと関わった経験はありませんが、ネット上での評判は全体的に高く、将来的には一緒に仕事をしていきたいと思っています。

Hatchet Group

Another Marine focused group, Hatchet Group (HATGRU) is an especially secretive group. I have no complaints about them at events, but I just don't have a lot of information on them. I do know that the leader own his own event company, so I assume that takes up part of their energy and focus.

海兵隊に焦点を当てたもう 1 つのグループであるハチェット グループ (HATGRU) は、特に秘密主義のグループです。イベントに関しては特に不満はないのですが、ただ情報が少ないんです。リーダーが自分のイベント会社を経営していることは知っているので、それが彼らのエネルギーと集中力の一部を占めていると思います。

5038th "Mayhem's Marauders"

The newest group for NATO, the 5038th has started with the same original goal as RR 10 years ago. While RR has a long presence and influence on MSW, the general NATO forces have lacked a strong and unified leadership group. From the ashes of a previous group TF Mayhem, the 5038 are debuting this autumn to improve general NATO operations and improve tactics and education of unaffiliated attendees. The gear is focused on US Army Rangers, as some of the members are veterans of that unit.  I'm currently a probationary member of this group, but living in Japan will make it difficult to return to America to go to events. This is another group for me to accompany if there is an event I plan to attend and KvB isn't going. 

NATO の最新グループである 5038 番目は、10 年前の RR と同じ当初の目標を持って発足しました。 RRはMSWに対して長い存在感と影響力を持っているが、NATO軍全体には強力で統一された指導グループが欠けていた。以前のグループTFメイヘムの残骸から、5038はNATO全体の作戦を改善し、無所属の参加者の戦術と教育を改善するために今秋デビューする。メンバーの一部はその部隊の退役軍人であるため、装備は米陸軍レンジャーに焦点を当てています。  私は現在このグループの試用メンバーですが、日本に住んでいるとイベントに行くためにアメリカに戻るのは難しくなります。これは、参加予定のイベントがあり、KvB が参加しない場合に同行するための別のグループです。
